What Are NCS and EMG Tests?
What Conditions Can NCS/EMG Diagnose?
Nerve conduction studies (NCS) and electromyography (EMG) are complementary components of electrodiagnostic testing used to assess nerve and muscle function. NCS evaluates the conduction of electrical impulses through peripheral nerves, while EMG assesses muscle electrical activity and provides information about nerve and muscle physiology.
Together, these studies provide physiologic information that can identify and localize abnormalities, characterize their nature and severity, and help distinguish among peripheral nerve, nerve root, and muscle disorders. Interpretation in the context of the clinical history and examination is essential to translating these findings into a meaningful diagnostic conclusion.
EMG/NCS testing helps identify and localize disorders of the peripheral nerves, nerve roots, and muscles, including peripheral and diabetic neuropathy, carpal tunnel syndrome, ulnar neuropathy, cervical and lumbar radiculopathy, nerve injuries, polyneuropathy, and other neuromuscular disorders.
Testing can also help clarify the cause of numbness, tingling, nerve pain, shooting pain, and muscle weakness, and distinguish among potential neurologic and neuromuscular causes.
When Is NCS/EMG Testing Recommended?
NCS/EMG testing is recommended when the history or examination suggests a disorder of the peripheral nerves, nerve roots, or muscles. Common indications include numbness, tingling, nerve or shooting pain, muscle weakness, suspected nerve injury, or symptoms suggestive of a pinched nerve.

Testing may be useful when evaluating suspected peripheral or diabetic neuropathy, carpal tunnel syndrome, ulnar neuropathy/cubital tunnel syndrome, cervical or lumbar radiculopathy, polyneuropathy, and other neuromuscular disorders.
